Jacobson Announces Driving Plans For 2017.

Words by Owlpine Group.

Reigning Dunlop Series Champion Garry Jacobson has announced his return to the category for 2017 with Prodrive Racing Australia.

Jacobson has opted to remain in the Dunlop Series for a second year to defend his Championship title instead of entering the Supercars Championship.

“THE DUNLOP SERIES HAS EVOLVED TO BE QUITE A PRESTIGIOUS CATEGORY IN THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS SO I’VE ALWAYS ENJOYED COMPETING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. WITH THE SUCCESS OF LAST YEAR I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROGRESS AS A RACE CAR DRIVER BOTH IN AND OUT OF THE CAR AND IN MOTORSPORT IT IS ALL ABOUT MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION AT THE RIGHT TIME AND I FEEL THAT STAYING WITH PRODRIVE RACING FOR ANOTHER YEAR WAS RIGHT FOR ME.”

Jacobson will take part in the Dunlop Series Races at the Clipsal 500, Tasmania SuperSprint, Phillip Island SuperSprint, Townsville 400, Sydney SuperSprint, Sandown 500, Bathurst 1000 (as a standalone non-points event) and Newcastle 500.

Remaining with Prodrive Racing is a positive for Jacobson, as his continuity racing in the same Ford FG X Falcon with the same team will benefit him on the track.

“WITH PRODRIVE RACING I’VE REALLY LEARNT A LOT LAST YEAR, AND THIS WILL CONTINUE WITH THE PEOPLE THAT ARE STILL INVOLVED WITH THE TEAM AND THE GUYS THAT WORK ON THE CAR, DAY IN AND DAY OUT SO I HAVE A GREAT FEEL FOR THE TEAM. NOW THAT I HAVE PUT THE MAJOR PART OF THE LEARNING TO THE SIDE, I CAN NOW FOCUS ON THE RESULTS AND MY RACE SPEED SO I FEEL LIKE I’M IN A GOOD SPOT FOR MY 2017 CAMPAIGN.”

Following a stellar win last year and tieing with his teammate for the Pole Position award, Jacobson is aiming to remain consistent in his bid for the title.

“I BELIEVE MY CONSISTENCY LAST YEAR WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP, SO I WILL BE AIMING FOR THAT SAME CONSISTENCY ALL YEAR. I FEEL LIKE I’VE GOT A LITTLE BIT MORE SPEED LEFT IN ME SO BEING UP THE FRONT OF THE FIELD IN QUALIFYING AND IN MY RACES, IS AN EXPECTATION THAT I HAVE FOR MYSELF AND PRODRIVE EXPECT FROM ME. THE COMPETITION THIS YEAR WILL BE AS STRONG AS ANY YEAR IF NOT STRONGER SO I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CHALLENGE OF BEING THE DUNLOP SERIES CHAMPION AND LOOK FORWARD TO TRYING  TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2017 LIKE WE DID LAST YEAR.”

The Dunlop Series is heading into one of its toughest years yet, with a field of new drivers, teams with increased factory support and with a series of other Supercars teams getting involved.

As 2017 marks Jacobson’s second year with the team, and Team Principal Tim Edwards is confident that Jacobson can display the same level of competitiveness as last year.

“IT’S FANTASTIC TO HAVE GARRY BACK ON BOARD FOR 2017. HIS SKILL WILL ONLY IMPROVE THIS YEAR AND I EXPECT TO SEE HIM BACK UP AT THE FRONT THIS SEASON.”

Prodrive Racing will undertake a test day for their Dunlop Series lineup at Winton Motor Raceway on the 22nd of February, where Jacobson’s livery will also be revealed.

Jacobson will return to the Dunlop Series at the Adelaide Clipsal 500 on March 2-5, with all Races to be televised LIVE on Fox Sports.
