Garry aiming to build on last year’s MEGA Bathurst performance

Garry Jacobson and Rick Kelly with the Larry Livery Castrol Nissan

Garry Jacobson heads to Mount Panorama this weekend confident of continuing the strength of his rookie performance at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 last year, where he finished eighth on debut with Jason Bright.

This year, the annual pilgrimage provides a new focus with a new team.

Jacobson teams up with Rick Kelly in the #11 Nissan Motorsport Castrol “Larry Livery” – in tribute to 25 years since Larry Perkins’ ‘last to first’ victory with Gregg Hansford.

Ironically, at just 18 months old, Jacobson – Australia’s fastest School Bus Driver – was still in nappies playing with his Hot Wheels cars on the day Perkins and Hansford performed that incredible feat.

The Victorian duo were strong at the recent RABBLE.club Sandown 500 where they charged through for an eighth placed finish after starting further back in the field.

Joining Kelly – a two time 1000 winner – and the combined experience of the Nissan team is something that excites Jacobson and something he feels will allow him to continue being one of the premier co-drivers in this year’s PIRTEK Enduro Cup and will further push his cause to be on the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship grid come the first event of next year.

The weekend will once again be a busy one for the 26-year-old from Shepparton – combining Bathurst 1000 duties with his Dunlop Super2 Series campaign in the MEGA Fuels Nissan for MW Motorsport.

Garry will be back in the MEGA Fuels Nissan in the Dunlop Super2 Series race

Having taken two Dunlop Super2 wins this season, Jacobson is still chasing an elusive first win at the Mountain. He’s finished second behind Paul Dumbrell previously and with this weekend’s 41 lap race returning to be a full points paying round, he is keen to see the MEGA Fuels Nissan on the top step of the podium.

Jacobson will be once again sporting his special helmet created specifically for this year’s PIRTEK Enduro Cup that features highlights from around his home region of the Goulburn Valley and hometown of Shepparton. This project – driven by Garry to give back to the Shepparton Motor Museum and Greater Shepparton City Council drew support from the Council and the Museum, along with Challenger Valves, MGA Insurance, FIX Muscle Performance, Thompson Motors and Varapodio Orchards.

In 2018, Garry Jacobson’s program is supported by MEGA Fuels, RABBLE.club, Exedy, Challenger Valves and Actuators, McQuinn Electrical and MGA Insurance Brokers.

Action gets underway on Thursday at Bathurst with television coverage of every session live on Fox Sports’ Bathurst Channel 506, 4K coverage on Foxtel 444 and coverage from Friday on Network TEN nationwide.

“Every time you go to Bathurst, you never know what to expect – we’re in the biggest drought New South Wales has ever seen, but I’m sure we’ll see some kind of weather event across the weekend!

“Last year was huge for me, as a rookie, with the weather, I couldn’t have been put into the car at the worst time, but I love the wet and was able to adapt pretty quickly to the track conditions.

“I pushed forward, did what I had to and handed the car over in one piece – and up several places, in the process we were able to score the second best finish for Jason for the year.

“This year with Rick we should be strong. He’s got the job done before and we’ve got the Larry livery on board with Castrol. That moment from 1993 is one of those that goes down in folklore and it’s pretty cool that there are some guys that worked in that team still at Nissan Motorsport today.

“I’m hoping for another great performance and if we can qualify up the field, we showed at Sandown we have good race pace, so obviously we would love a top result which should put us in good position for the PIRTEK Enduro Cup heading to the Gold Coast.

“In the MEGA Racing Nissan, it’s awesome that Bathurst is once again a points paying round in Dunlop Super2. The Saturday race is always entertaining and the field this year has been so close as Sandown showed.

“I’ve finished second at Bathurst before to Paul (Dumbrell) – who is always a tough challenge – it would be nice to get the weekend underway by getting one over him in Super2!

“Bathurst is always special and it is even more so that we have such great support heading there this year with the likes of MEGA Fuels and RABBLE.club who’ve been right there with us this year, along with our additional partners like Exedy, Challenger, McQuinn and MGA.

“Strapping the Shepparton Helmet on again is something that I do with great pride and having the support from back home and from the supporters who are going to be there with us this weekend is going to be something very cool and something very unique that we’ve been able to create.

“I can’t thank the Greater City of Shepparton, the Shepparton Motor Museum, Thompson Motors, Varapodio Orchards, FIX Muscle Performance, MGA and Challenger enough for their continued support.

“Let’s get after it!”
